Shifting from Acclaim to Fury: Conservative Response to Epstein Document Release is Divided.
Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of documents involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image appear in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt serious concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
But, some conservative commentators and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few do not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed some conservative voices to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding these documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
However, broader comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the congressional vote to pass a bill mandating the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that contained no previously unseen information.
