Revitalized Daniil Medvedev Wins First Championship in 882 Days
19 of Daniil Medvedev's 21 titles have been earned on hard surfaces
A resurgent Daniil Medvedev secured his first trophy for 882 days with success over Corentin Moutet in the tournament championship match.
The athlete, a ex- world number one, has had a difficult year, achieving just a single victory at the big events and undergoing a setback at the American major.
His inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serving in specific - caused him falling of the elite rankings and ultimately parting ways with long-time trainer Gilles Cervara.
Currently collaborating with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually improved in the past month - peaking in a hard-fought competitive win over Frenchman Moutet.
This represents the player's initial championship after the Rome competition and maiden on a hard surface from that period of the previous year.
The win also indicates he has achieved twenty-one victories at 21 distinct tournaments.
"For the first time I am participating in a competition with my both daughters together, so to secure a title is especially meaningful," stated tennis professional Medvedev.
"This title is in honour of my second daughter her name, because the initial championship I got when my first daughter my daughter was delivered was for her."
Medvedev, the past champion, had been defeated in his past six finals, featuring in Halle earlier this year.
His defensive play style and frequent emotional displays on the tennis court had caused observers to question if his skill to play at the top level was finished.
Yet the player has altered his approach in recent weeks, striving to come to the net and perform assertively, backed up by an enhanced service.
He recovered from a deficit in the first set against the tricky Moutet, securing 4 of the last five points to take the lead.
The competitors swapped break points in the second set before Moutet, bidding for his initial tour championship, seized the initiative to force a third set.
Moutet saved four early-game break points in a close final set before Medvedev broke to that score to secure the win.
Fittingly, Medvedev clinched the win with a shot at the front of the court, with his opponent unable to manage a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
